Week One Preview

Game of the Blingaweek

D's AutoPicks (Derrek) vs. Optimus Prime (Allen):

This match will finally decide what no one is wondering: are the percussion intruments in the Caribbean called steel drums or kettle drums?

D votes steel, in part because his third-round pick was the Steelers defense (no, I'm not done bringing that up, yet). He fields a top-heavy team: Philip Rivers (vs. MIN) at QB, Larry Fitzgerald (vs. CAR) at WR, and Rashard Mendenhall (@BAL) and Darren McFadden (@DEN) at RB. Beyond that strong core, his team isn't too impressive, but does it have to be? His opponent is Allen, after all.

Allen's team is the opposite; nice depth, but little in the way of stars. Drew Brees (@GB) is a stud, no doubt, and Brandon Lloyd (vs. OAK) was stellar last year. Santonio Holmes (vs. DAL) looks to have a good weekend, too.

I think this game will turn out like last year's third-place game: Derrek with a solid win. Pick: D's AutoPicks.

Other Blingamatches

Pullman's MondoSquad (Pulley) vs. Our Lil' Albondigas (Dave):

Babel and I sampled some albondigas this past weekend (if he also tasted the meatballs at a tapas place in Logan Square). That's not relevant to this game, though. Pulley's team looks strong; Dave's just OK.

Pick: Pullman's MondoSquad.

Pralines & Dick (Rabbit) vs. Not You Fat Jesus (Pat):

Like our Game of the Blingaweek, this one will be replayed week thirteen. Both teams have big question marks; Arian Foster's status for Sunday is uncertain for Rabs, while Peyton Manning is out for Pat. Nick's team looks more equipped to deal with its setback.

Pick: Pralines & Dick.

Oedipus Rex Ryan (Mike) vs. Goulden Pink OBGYN's (Babel):

Neither Mike nor Mark seems to be happy with their team. Mike because he had some rough auto-draft selections, Babel because he felt the first few rounds didn't shake out his way. I think this should be a close match. Both have some players who could have huge days (Hakeem Nicks (@WAS) and Adrian Peterson (@SD) for Mike, Michael Vick (@STL) and Calvin Johnson (@TB) for Babel), so this could come down to whose role players score the most. Babel's look to get more touches, at least.

Pick: Goulden Pink OBGYN's.

St. Olaf Real Stuff (Ed) vs. Harrison Hammers (Matt):

Matt's got some big question marks (Jahvid Best (@TB), Reggie Wayne (@HOU), Dez Bryant (@NYJ)), while I can be a bit more confident in my team.

Pick: St. Olaf Real Stuff.

The Chocolate Donuts (Kevin) vs. Location Nouns (Rob):

Yahoo projects Rob's team to have a huge week. Looking at his team, I could see it. Thing is, I could also see Kevin's team having one, particularly his RB tandem of Chris Johnson (@JAC) and LeSean McCoy (@STL). Rob will count on Aaron Rodgers (vs. NO) to carry him to victory.

Pick: The Chocolate Donuts.

Closing Thoughts

Don't worry, everyone; this will be the shortest Gazette of the year.
