The Sanderson Gazette - 2011-09-28 - Order Amongst the Chaos
So it was a weird week. We drop from eleven 100-point scorers to seven; and three of those lost! Mike, Matt, and Rob take tough-luck defeats, while Rabbit and Pat escape with fortunate wins.
Week Three Recap
Derrek def. Rob, 111.02-109.31:
Rob was hoping for stat corrections from Yahoo, and he got them. Of course, it didn't help him that Derrek's score increased, knocking Rob from his undefeated perch. D got a huge week from Darren McFadden (30.03) and identical scores from his WRs (Fitzgerald and Sidney Rice, 14.53) to put up a really nice total; Rob got unreal weeks from Wes Welker (42.83) and Rob Gronkowski (26.53), but was undone by Kenny Britt (0.40, torn ACL and MCL), Peyton Hillis (0.00, DNP), and the Patriots defense (0.00).
Rabbit def. Babel, 94.96-81.27:
Rabs finally gets some ink in the win column, at the expense of Babel, whose team might be getting worse by the week. Brady put up 27.85 and Mike Wallace put up 25.20 for Nick, offsetting his stinky -0.30 from James Starks. Babel got 26.40 from Megatron and 19.10 from draft-day sleeper Daniel Thomas, but not much else. And now he has to deal with Michael Vick's broken right hand.
Pulley def. Matt, 114.03-107.03:
Pulley also got of the schneid this week, with some help from yours truly via trade. The Greene-plus-Moss-for-Jackson swap paid off for Adam, as he got 21.50 points combined from the duo, and avoided playing Reggie Bush in the process (more on this later). His key player, however, was Jermichael Finley, who put up 29.33 points. Matt had quite a good week, too, getting 19.33 from Jimmy Graham and 21.80 from Matthew Stafford, but it wasn't enough to nab a victory.
Ed def. Mike, 123.82-108.58:
Mike's our final tough-luck loser, getting 26.65 from Mark Sanchez (who could have earned his owner the Start of the Week in different circumstances) and 25.00 from Fred Jackson. I edged him out thanks to an identical 26.65 from my QB, Matt Schaub, and a whopping 28.60 from Ryan Mathews. Despite his losing record, Mike's not in terrible shape; his 360.61 total points pace the Blingaleague.
Kevin def. Dave, 113.31-81.20:
Representative of Dave's week (and fantasy career): Antonio Gates was out this week, so Dave smartly played Brent Celek in his place. The outcome? A meager 1.20 points at TE. Kevin continued to get big points from LeSean McCoy (20.53) and Stevie Johnson (18.53), and his sly waiver pickup, Ryan Fitzpatrick, added 21.85.
Pat def. Allen, 93.59-72.00:
Pat overcame a big zero from the injured Beanie Wells to defeat Allen, in part thanks to Ray Rice's big game (19.17). Allen got 28.40 from Drew Brees, but the rest of his lineup sputtered and cost him his unblemished record.

Ten points is good, but falls short of the pace needed to hit the mystical 200...

Weekly Awards
Team Blangums: I'm proud of my team this week. A score of 123.82 is nothing to laugh at.
Slapped Heartbeat: For the third straight week, Allen's game produced the Slapped Heartbeat award. Unlike weeks one and two, however, it was Allen on the losing end, with 72.00 points.
Start of the Week: Pulley made a big trade for Shonn Greene (12.17) and Santana Moss (9.33), in exchange for Vincent Jackson (8.50). By doing so, he avoided having to play Reggie Bush and his 0.90 points at flex. Greene and Moss equalled 21.50 between them, better than the 9.40 Jackson and Bush scored; that's a 12.10-point difference, in a 7.00-point victory.
Misplay of the Week: LeGarrette Blount's 9.83 points, which was 9.83 more than Peyton Hillis scored, would have pushed Rob ahead of Derrek. Instead, he took the loss.
Week Four Preview
Game of the Blingaweek
St. Olaf Real Stuff (Ed, 2-1, 2nd) vs. The Chocolate Donuts (Kevin, 2-1, 4th):
It's a rare condition, in this day and age, that the two highest scorers in one week meet the next. There must be some magic clue inside this blingums league, because that's exactly what we have on tap for week four.
Coming off a Team Blangums week, I looked poised to continue my run of success. Roddy White (@SEA) and Vincent Jackson (vs. MIA) have juicy matchups. The same can be said of Matt Forte (vs. CAR) and Ryan Mathews (vs. MIA). Matt Schaub's numbers, though, should take a hit against the Steelers and their third-round-calibre defense.
Kevin will continue to circle the wagons with the Buffalo Bills as they travel to Cincinnati. Kev hopes that Ryan Fitzpatrick, Stevie Johnson, and Scott Chandler can all have big weeks. He will need them to come through to knock me down a peg.
Pick: St. Olaf Real Stuff.
Other Blingamatches
Camp Hope (Pat, 2-1, 3rd) vs. Location Nouns (Rob, 2-1, 1st):
You might wonder why this game, between the current first- and third-place squadrons, isn't our featured matchup. Well, for one, it doesn't pit last week's top two high scores against each other. For another, Pat had a weak win, and Rob lost last week. Anyway, Rob's team looks really damn good this year. Pulley must be devastated.
Pick: Location Nouns.
Harrison Hammers (Matt, 1-2, 11th) vs. Oedipus Rex Ryan (Mike, 1-2, 7th):
Our seemingly obligatory rivalry game this week pits an overall disappointment (Matt) vs. a team (Mike) that has taken usurped the position Dave held last year (lost of points, poor record). Yahoo likes Matt as of today, but I'm not so sure. I think Adrian Peterson (@KC) and Fred Jackson (@CIN) explode for Michael this week.
Pick: Oedipus Rex Ryan.
D's AutoPicks (Derrek, 2-1, 5th) vs. Goulden Pink OBGYN's (Babel, 1-2, 9th):
Babel has almost no choice but to continue rolling the dice with Michael Vick. While the mercurial QB battles through injury, at least Mark has Calvin Johnson on his side; Megatron (@DAL) combines with Percy Harvin (@KC) for a promising receiving corps this week. Meanwhile, Derrek's matchups aren't as promising; McFadden's Raiders are likely to be playing from behind against the Patriots this week, and the Steelers defense faces the potent Texans.
Pick: Goulden Pink OBGYN's.
Pullman's MondoSquad (Pulley, 1-2, 12th) vs. Optimus Prime (Allen, 2-1, 6th):
I feel like last year could be repeating itself. Will Pulley right the ship after an ugly first two weeks? Will Allen freefall for a bit, but then get red-hot? The Seahawks could be a cure for Pulley's Falcon-heavy offense; will that be enought to offset a rough RB week for Shonn Greene (@BAL) and Frank Gore (@PHI)? Can Drew Brees, Robert Meachem, and Pierre Thomas destroy Jacksonville and propel Allen to a breakout week? Will my questions matter at all?
Pick: Optimus Prime.
Pralines & Dick (Rabbit, 1-2, 8th) vs. The Yips (Dave, 1-2, 10th):
Don't worry, I remembered to preview all six games this week. I'm not sure I needed to, though; this game has all the markings of a laugher.
Pick: Pralines & Dick.
Closing Thoughts
I didn't plan on noting week three's overall rank all-time, but our scores have forced me to do so: week three, 2011, is now the fourteenth-highest-scoring week in modern Blingaleague history (fifteenth if you count 2007).
