The Sanderson Gazette - 2012-08-22 - Bernie and JuJu and the Case of the Stolen Kicker

"I have learned to not make predictions in the draft chat. They don't turn out well." - Derrek Drenckpohl

Draft Recap

Pat Gawne (Camp Hope):

Didn't mess up the first pick (Ray Rice)... Took advantage of Hakeem Nicks's slipping to the third... I don't share his confidence in Matt Schaub, especially ahead of Philip Rivers... Malort still tastes awful... Cutler in the 9th looks like a very nice keeper, but Dustin Keller in the 11th - not so much... Brandon LaFell could be an interesting 12th-rounder for Pat.

Mike Schertz (schertzopotamus):

Mike (or is it JuJu?) had a clear strategy: load up on high-upside youth... Impressive for a guy who got back from his honeymoon less than twelve hours before the draft... Doug Martin, in particular, is a great pick in the late 2nd... RGIII in the 5th seemed like a reach, though, especially with Eli already on board... Alshon Jeffery in the 8th gets the annual "this draft must be in Chicago" award... Jacob Tamme was a nice reward for waiting a relative eternity on a TE.

Kevin Pattermann (The Chocolate Donuts):

Pulley couldn't pry the 3rd overall pick (and Tom Brady) away from Kev... Vernon Davis was not a good keeper - Antonio Gates and Aaron Hernandez both could have been drafted in that spot... Vincent Brown already got hurt... LaMichael James could have some great keeper value down the road... Mark Sanchez won't (and I'm surprised he hasn't been dropped yet).

Mike Romor (Bernard's Bullies):

Bernie (formerly Mike R.) is hoping for a Chris Johnson rebound... He also wasn't afraid to jump on Matt Ryan before the QBs all were gone... And then followed that up with Andrew Luck... Demaryius Thomas, particularly over Steve Smith and Nicks, doesn't thrill me... Laurent Robinson: can he win games by himself for Mike again this year?

Dave Fultz (Fultzyboys):

The Brothers Fultz got their target (Matt Forte) in the first... Colston in the second should give steady, solid - if unspecatular - production... The Jacksons (Vincent and Desean) will not be so even keeled... Waiting on a TE did not go as well as it did for Schertz, but Greg Olsen could do some nice things... Anyone want to take bets for the first week Dave plays a guy on his bye?

Mark Babel (Artifish Inteligents):

Babel is officially opposed to Yahoo's team name character limit... Also opposed to two guys with the same name being in the same league... He'll be trotting out a trio of boring-but-mostly-reliable RBs (Turner, Green-Ellis, Greene), but has some explosive pass-catchers (Calvin Johnson and Antonio Gates)... Coby Fleener has some promise, as well... I'm also guessing, with Sebastian Janikowski on his roster, Mark would be in favor of 60+ yard FGs bein worth six points.

Richie Armour (DICK ARMOUR):

Richie returns from his four-year ban for PEDs... Got a nice, high-upside first-rounder in Andre Johnson... And got a QB steal in Philip Rivers... I like the Donald Brown pick, too... On the downside, his two Cowboys (Austin and Witten) are both already injured... The Jets defense slipped farther than I thought they would.

Adam Pulley (Pullman's MondoSquad):

The top of Pulley's draft did not get rave reviews from the draft room... Additionally, relying on two WRs from the same team appears to be the new Pullman technique (Steelers this year, Chargers last year)... That said, Pulley might have won rounds four through ten - Hernandez was a steal, Mendenhall has been activated, and LeShoure should be getting his carries once he's back... If Pulley wound up not drafting Rob Bironas one year, I think my entire worldview would be shaken.

Derrek Drenckpohl (D's Nuts):

After D's adventures in trying to draft players already on rosters, I want to invest in a Family Feud-style "X" buzzer... Can you tell he's a Vikings fan? In all seriousness, Peterson and Harvin were good picks... Dez Bryant maybe, if he's not hurt too badly... Pay no attention to the quarterbacks behind the curtain! (Alex Smith and John Skelton, oh my)... D drafted the Texans defense in a respectable slot, the 9th... My pick for sleeper on Derrek's team: Leonard Hankerson.

Allen Clark (Optimus Prime):

Allen pulled a Pulley, drafting both big-name Patriots WRs (Welker and Lloyd)... Allen's RB stable (Lynch, McGahee, DeAngelo Williams) should be great - if we go back to 2009... Drew Brees should cover a lot of holes, though... And Jonathan Dwyer could have some use for a last-round nobody... Allen hates iPads and loves half-yards of beer.

Rob Gross (Location Nouns):

Rob is the first player in Blingaleague history to flip out over having his targeted kicker get taken right before his pick... Seriously, Roundhouse... Dwayne Bowe is a contender for Steal of the Draft... Kenny Britt could be huge once he's back, too... I don't believe anyone would have grabbed Ben Tate in the spots that would justify Rob trading up to get him.

Ed Gross (Half of a Horse):

Going high-floor in the first two rounds doesn't really work when your second-round pick (Greg Jennings) is having concussion issues... Still, Steven Jackson should be a reliable RB1 for me... Not having a 3rd or a 4th cost me potential value at QB, although Big Ben and Flacco are somewhat-decent consolation prizes... My RBs are weak - will I really be starting Pierre Thomas in week one?

Matt Harrison (Harrison Hammers):

"Conservative, but risky" is definitely Matt's motto, seeing as he went with Jamaal Charles and Trent Richardson in the first two rounds... He trusts Peyton Manning more than me, taking him and Eric Decker in the 4th/5th... Titus Young is intriguing... Who the F is Bilal Powell?... Also, let's all recognize Matt for managing his own draft, plus a good chunk of Allen's, with a side helping of Richie-assistance for good measure over at the round table.

Nick "Rabbit" Warren (Pralines & Dick):

Rabs finally got to take possession of the Sanderson Cup!... MJD and Roddy White are a good haul for the 1st/2nd elbow... Nobody likes Tony Romo... And what's with the Redskins-love? Not that Garcon, Fred Davis, and Royster weren't nice picks at those slots, but still... Rabs has a good-looking team, but doesn't look like a clear favorite as in previous years.

Weekly Awards

Team Blangums: Matt and Pulley will share, as they helped the draft move smoothly by babysitting Allen and putting together a cheat sheet for Derrek, respectively.

Slapped Heartbeat: Nobody. The one thing that stood out as I input the draft into Yahoo is that no teams look especially good or bad. I can't imagine the league will be even tighter this year than last year, but who knows.

Start of the week: Allen, for purchasing a half-yard glass to drink some of his numerous beers out of. Also, he played a not-only-Pink music selection.

Misplay of the week: Somehow, Pat and Kyle returned from the liquor store with two bottles of Malort between them. Ugh.

Closing Thoughts

Good luck everyone. And Allen, if you want to write our week one preview, send me something in the next two weeks.

Actually, if any of you ever want to contribute anything to the Gazette, let me know. That could be a lot of fun.
